Pictures From the Prairie- Porcupine grass

July 10, 2023 by

Here is another great picture from the prairie by Brown County-based Farm Bill Biologist Nate Fore. He captured the unique form of porcupine grass, Hesperostipa spartea, a native to Minnesota prairies with seeds reminiscent of a porcupine's quills. The seed's awns react to changes in moisture and temperature by twisting like a drill, providing the natural ability to work themselves into the soil. Many thanks to Nate for the share!
