Pictures From the Prairie: Milkweed species
July 17, 2023 by Dave Schwarz
Senior Farm Bill Biologist Gemma Kleinschmidt has been spotting lots of milkweed in bloom while working in the landscape lately. Most people don't know that Minnesota is home to 14 different species of milkweed. With Common Milkweed of course being the most recognizable, other milkweed species come in a wide array of colors and grow in varying habitat conditions. Pictured are, from left to right, Butterfly, Swamp and Whorled Milkweed, all fully in bloom. Thanks to Gemma for sending these photos along! She is based in Swift County and works from the USDA Service Center in Benson.
